How the actual-volume estimate works

Inside dimensions and the real waterline produce a better starting point than the manufacturer's rounded capacity. Substrate and decor remain estimates unless displacement is measured.

Measure inside the aquarium

Use inside length and width, or inside diameter for a cylinder. Measure water depth to the current waterline so the air gap is already excluded.

  • Use a rectangular shape for standard tanks and cubes.
  • Use a cylinder only when diameter stays consistent.
  • Measure average substrate depth across the footprint.
  • Choose a conservative decor estimate.

Why substrate is not subtracted completely

A substrate bed contains both solid grains and water-filled gaps. This version estimates 65% of the bed volume as solid displacement, so results are useful but intentionally labeled as estimates.

Use water-change amounts as planning context

The result shows common 10%, 25%, and 50% volumes. Match replacement water temperature and treatment to the aquarium and do not assume a large change is automatically appropriate for every situation.

Common questions

Why is actual aquarium volume lower than rated capacity?

Rated capacity often uses outside dimensions and full height. The real aquarium has glass thickness, an air gap, substrate, rocks, wood, equipment, and sometimes a lower waterline.

Should I use internal or external dimensions?

Internal dimensions are more useful because they exclude glass or acrylic thickness. Measure the current water depth from the inside bottom to the waterline.

Does substrate contain water?

Yes. Water sits between grains, so the calculator estimates about 65% of the geometric substrate bed as solid displacement instead of subtracting the whole bed volume.

Can I use this result for medication dosing?

Treat it as an estimate and independently verify critical dosing. Follow the current product label and species-specific professional guidance; do not use one calculator result as an automatic medication instruction.
